The New Playbook for Technical SEO: GEO

Hey, owners and operators still fighting on the independent site front line — this is Neo.

I’ve been talking to a lot of friends lately, and there’s one shared anxiety: traffic is getting harder and harder to come by. That old “keywords + backlinks” combo punch feels like it’s running out of steam. And now that Google’s AI search (SGE) is here, the search results page has completely changed shape — where is our website traffic headed?

It feels like the days of texting on a Nokia, and then suddenly the iPhone arrives. The rules of the game are about to change.

Today, as a veteran of the game, I want to talk straight from the heart: in the AI era, how should we do technical SEO so we don’t get left behind — and even grab a head start? No fluff, just practical, actionable stuff.

From SEO to GEO: It’s Not Just a Name Change

Let’s start with a new term: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Sounds fancy, right? Don’t be intimidated — just think of it as the “Pro Max” upgrade of SEO.

In the old days, SEO was about getting a good ranking on the search engine results page (SERP) — top three, top ten — then waiting for users to click through to your site.

Now AI has arrived and given us GEO. Its goal is more ambitious: not just ranking, but getting your content directly selected by AI and woven into the answers it generates.

Take a look at the image below: a user asks a question, and AI responds with a comprehensive answer that cites links from several websites.

That means users may never even scroll down to the traditional search results. If AI doesn’t “take a liking” to your content, the traffic just isn’t coming your way.

So the core of GEO is making your site’s content easier for AI to understand, extract, and cite.

The Four Core Pillars of Technical SEO in the AI Era

The good news: if you built a solid technical SEO foundation before, you’re already halfway there. GEO doesn’t mean tearing everything down and starting over — it means refining what you have and optimizing for AI’s “taste.”

I’ve boiled it down to four core pillars. Let’s go through them one by one.

1. Schema Markup: Let AI “Instantly Get” Your Pages

This isn’t new, but it has never been more important.

Schema markup is basically putting “labels” on the content of your pages. You’re telling search engines: “Hey, this chunk is about a product, it costs $99, it’s in stock, and it’s rated 4.8 stars.”

Without these labels, AI reads your page like a novel — it has to guess which part is the price and which is the model number. With Schema, AI gets a clean, structured spreadsheet: data at a glance, extracted fast and accurately.

For independent site owners, here are the Schema types I recommend prioritizing:

  • Product / Service: The lifeline for B2C and B2B. Clearly mark your product/service price, stock status, SKU, and more. When AI answers questions like “where to buy cheap running shoes,” it prioritizes sites with clear, structured info.
  • FAQPage: Mark up the common Q&A sections on your product pages and blog posts. When users ask questions like “how to clean leather bags,” and your FAQ has the answer, AI may pull it out directly as the answer.
  • HowTo: Written a tutorial like “How to assemble a bookshelf”? Use this markup and AI can easily extract your steps and present them one by one to users.
  • Review / AggregateRating: Customer reviews and ratings are trust-builders, and AI responds to them too — it treats high ratings as a quality signal.
  • Organization / LocalBusiness: Tell AI “who you are” and “where you are” to build a clear brand entity.
  • BreadcrumbList: Breadcrumb navigation helps AI understand your site hierarchy, like “Home > Men’s Clothing > Shoes > Running Shoes.”

Practical tips:

  • Write Schema in JSON-LD — that’s what Google officially recommends.
  • After writing, always validate it with Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Don’t overdo it — only mark up content that users can actually see, and keep Schema consistent with the page content.

2. Site Speed and Performance: AI Has No Patience for “Loading…”

Speed is the ultimate weapon in any martial art. That’s gospel in SEO — and in the GEO era, it’s a matter of life and death.

Before, a slow site mostly hurt user experience and cost you a few ranking spots. Now, AI engines pick source material from billions of pages — if your site loads slowly or is unstable, AI will skip you and move on to the next faster one. Speed has become a “passing line.”

Imagine two sites with equally good content — why would AI choose you? Speed is that decisive tiebreaker.

Practical tips:

  • Image compression: The fastest win. Use tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh to compress images, and prefer WebP or AVIF formats. Turn on lazy loading.
  • Reduce render-blocking: Don’t let your CSS and JavaScript block the main content from loading.
  • Server response time (TTFB): Aim for under 200 milliseconds. Choosing a solid hosting provider matters.
  • Use a CDN: If you do business globally, this is mandatory! Cloudflare and Fastly are great options that let users around the world access your site quickly.

3. Content Structure: A Love Letter Written for Machines

As smart as AI is, it’s fundamentally still a “machine” — it likes things that are logically clear and well organized. The more structured your content, the easier AI finds it to read — and the more willing it is to cite you.

Say goodbye to wall-of-text writing. Honestly, neither AI nor today’s human readers have the patience for that anymore.

Practical tips:

  • Keep URLs clean: Use short, descriptive URLs like /collections/mens-clothing/running-shoes, not /p?id=123.
  • Use heading tags properly (H1-H6): H1 for the main title, H2 for chapter titles, H3 for subsection titles… follow the hierarchy strictly, don’t skip levels (like jumping from H1 straight to H3).
  • Lean on lists and tables: For steps, feature comparisons, and spec sheets, use ordered lists (1, 2, 3…), bulleted lists, or tables instead of paragraphs. It’s far clearer — and AI loves formats it can “copy-paste” directly.
  • Build solid internal linking: Link from your pillar pages to related subpages, and link those subpages back — creating a tight topical network that shows AI your expertise in the field.

4. Technical Infrastructure: The “Passport” and “ID Card” of the AI World

Last but most fundamental: your site’s technical architecture. If something’s wrong here, the other three pillars don’t matter.

Practical tips:

  • Crawlability: Make sure your important pages aren’t blocked by robots.txt, and that Googlebot and Bingbot can access them freely. Many AI models are built on top of their index databases.
  • Content freshness: Use accurate publish/update dates, include <lastmod> tags in your XML sitemap, and clearly mark updates in your articles. It tells AI: “My content here is the latest!”
  • Site security (HTTPS): These days, a site without HTTPS encryption is like going outside without clothes — who would trust you? Get it done.
  • Avoid heavy reliance on JS rendering: Don’t hide core product info or article content behind JavaScript that only displays after heavy execution. For critical content, prefer server-side rendering (SSR) so AI sees it directly when crawling.

Summary: Embrace Change, the Future Is Bright

Look at the whole picture, and you’ll see the technical core of GEO is actually the SEO fundamentals we already know: Schema, performance, content structure, technical architecture.

The only difference is that in the AI era, these are no longer “optional questions” — they’re “required questions.” They determine whether you get the “entry ticket” into AI’s answer pool.

For us Chinese sellers competing in overseas markets, this is both a challenge and a massive opportunity. In some ways, AI’s evaluation criteria level the playing field between “big companies” and “small and beautiful” ones. It cares more about your content’s expertise, your site’s technical foundation, and real user experience.

Stop staring at the same patch of keyword-ranking ground. Look up — the world has already changed. Starting now, follow the GEO playbook, sharpen your site’s technical fundamentals, and make your content not just seen by users, but selected by AI.

That is our most solid moat in the age of AI search.
