Google AI Overviews Sweeps Across 9 Industries — Is Independent Site SEO About to Change Forever?

Hi everyone, this is Neo.

Independent site owners — have you felt the weird shifts in Google traffic lately?

If your rankings haven’t dropped but traffic is still sliding, or you fought your way to the #1 spot on page one only to find users never click your link — then today’s article is a must-read.

Recently, BrightEdge published a blockbuster report revealing the explosive growth of Google AI Overviews (AIO, i.e., AI-generated summaries) over the past year. This data doesn’t just expose where Google Search is headed — it’s a wake-up call for every operator doing cross-border e-commerce and B2B going global.

AIO in Overdrive: 58% Growth in One Year

The report shows that from February 2025 to February 2026, AIO coverage surged a staggering 58%.

What does that mean? It means more and more often, when users search, the first thing they see isn’t your site’s link — it’s the “answer” Google’s AI hands over directly.

Just look at the brutal numbers per industry:

  • Education: AIO trigger rate jumped from 18% to a staggering 83%.
  • B2B Tech: Exploded from 36% to 82%. (Folks in SaaS and B2B — feeling the tremors yet?)
  • Restaurants: Surged from 10% to 78%.
  • Healthcare: Already high at 72% — now sitting at 88%.

Neo’s take: Why these industries? Because the search intent in these fields is usually “consulting” and “decision-making,” not simple “finding.” Users need explanations, comparisons, and recommendations — and that’s exactly what AI excels at. If your site is still chasing traffic by stuffing keywords instead of providing real “answers,” you’ll be dead in the water in this AI era.

Two Worlds: Traditional Search Isn’t Dead, But…

Despite AIO’s rapid growth, the report gives an interesting number: traditional organic search still accounts for 52% of queries.

Looks like a 50/50 split, evenly matched?

Don’t be naive.

Even though traditional search still holds a slight edge in volume, high-value queries (like B2B purchasing decisions and complex technical questions) are shifting en masse to AI.

What’s left in that 52%? A lot of it is navigational queries (like “Facebook login” or “official site of X”), or local service searches. Meanwhile, the “money keywords” that actually drive conversions are being taken over by AI.

The Most Brutal Truth: Even Ranking #1 Is Useless?

This might be the most soul-crushing finding in the report:

Only 17% of the sources AI Overviews cites overlap with the top 10 organic results.

In other words: even if you bust your ass to get a keyword to #1 on Google’s page one, you still may not appear in AI’s answers. Conversely, some pages ranked on page two or even deeper can get cited by AIO and receive massive exposure — because their content quality is high and they happen to answer one of AI’s sub-questions.

Why is that?

Because the mechanism behind AIO is FastSearch and query fan-out. When you ask a complex question, AI breaks it into multiple sub-questions and searches for answers to each one separately. It’s looking for “the most precise snippets,” not “the website with the highest overall authority.”

Neo’s take: The logic of SEO has completely changed. Before, we fought over “rankings.” Now we fight over “being cited.” Before, it was “people find information.” Now it’s “AI finds answers, then feeds them to people.” If your content is generic fluff — or written for SEO’s sake alone — AI will ignore you no matter how high your authority. But if you have unique insights, data, or expert opinions (golden knowledge) in a niche, you have a chance to overtake on the curve.

What Should Independent Site Sellers Do?

How do we respond to this AIO wave?

  1. Stop staring at rank tracking: What you need to watch is whether your content is being cited by AI.
  2. Content is king, but speak “human”: AI loves clear, well-structured, plain-language content that answers questions directly. Cut the fluff.
  3. Target long-tail and Q&A: Since AI finds answers by decomposing questions, when we write articles we should anticipate users’ underlying questions and answer them directly in a Q&A format.
  4. Build E-E-A-T: Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness matter more than ever.

Summary

Google’s AIO takeover isn’t the future tense — it’s happening right now.

Traditional search still exists, but in high-value verticals like B2B, education, and tech, AI is already the absolute protagonist. As independent site operators, we need to shift from “keyword thinking” to “answer thinking.”

Don’t fear the change — embrace it. After all, in the AI era, truly valuable content never stays buried.
