How Should You Approach SEO in 2025-2026?
Hi everyone, this is Neo.
I’ve been talking with a lot of friends running independent sites lately, and anxiety is a common thread. Ever since Google rolled out AI Overviews (AIO), tons of people are shouting “SEO is dead.” Will zero-click searches eat all our traffic? Is the content we work so hard on even worth anything anymore?
Honestly, I felt that anxiety too. But after digging into the talks from the recent Shenzhen SEO conference, plus my own observations and hands-on work, I’ve realized: SEO isn’t dead — it’s evolved. The rules of the game have changed, and so must our playbook.
Today, I’ll break down, in plain language and with my own understanding, how those of us building overseas independent sites should play SEO in 2025 and into 2026.
1. Mindset Shift: Your Opponent Is No Longer the “Search Engine” — It’s the “Answer Engine”
First, we need to flip a core belief: users are no longer “searching” — they’re “asking.” What they want isn’t a list of blue links; it’s a direct, precise answer.
That means our battlefield has shifted from the traditional “search engine” to the “answer engine.”
And our KPIs have to shift too. We used to stare at keyword rankings and click-through rate (CTR). Now and going forward, the more core metric is “share of answer” — what share of AI-generated answers features your brand and content?
You might say: if AI steals the clicks, doesn’t that kill our traffic?
Actually, it’s the opposite. Traffic from AI recommendations may be lower in volume than traditional search, but it’s extremely high value. Data shows that visitors referred by AI can convert at up to 23x the rate of organic search visitors!
Why? Because AI has already done a layer of filtering and endorsing for you. When a user lands on your site via an AI recommendation, they arrive with strong trust and clear intent.
So stop agonizing over lost clicks. The urgent task now is to make AI “fall in love” with you — feed it your brand.
2. Authority Wins: From “Links Are King” to “Mentions Are King”
In the past, we spent all day building backlinks, convinced links were everything. In the AI era, that logic is outdated.
AI cares much more about authority and trustworthiness — what we call E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust). And that authority increasingly comes from “mentions/citations” across the web and the authority of “entities.”
In plain terms: how many authoritative, trusted third parties talk about you and cite you.
One dataset shows that brand web mentions correlate with brand visibility in AI Overviews at 0.664, while backlinks correlate at only 0.218.
What does that mean?
It means our focus needs to shift from “heads-down link building” to “heads-up brand building.”
Here are some practical plays:
- Invest in “digital PR”: Stop thinking about buying links. Think about how to get authoritative media and well-known blogs in your industry to cover you. One story in Forbes or a top industry outlet beats a hundred junk links. That third-party validation is the best “resume” you can show AI.
- Control your “entity” information: How does AI get to know your brand? It scrapes information about you from all over — Wikipedia, Google Knowledge Graph, industry databases. What we need to do is systematically audit these platforms and make sure your brand story is accurate, consistent, and positive. If you find negative or outdated info, find ways to “reprogram” AI’s view of you.
- Ignite “review buzz”: User reviews are a major signal AI uses to judge whether a brand is trustworthy. Stop farming those fake “good product” reviews. Guide your real customers to leave specific, contextual praise. If you sell running shoes, a review like “these shoes completely solved my arch pain during marathon training” is worth its weight in gold to AI.
3. Content Restructure: From “Page Optimization” to “Content Block Optimization”
When AI understands content, it no longer looks at a whole page — it breaks content into “passages/chunks” to retrieve and understand.
That means our content structure has to change completely.
- Content blocks must be independently understandable: Imagine AI pulling a single paragraph out of your article to answer a user’s question. If that paragraph makes no sense out of context, it’s worthless.
- How? Make sure each paragraph revolves around a single core idea with semantic coherence. Use clear subheadings (H2/H3) to structure everything, so each section is like an independent “Lego brick.”
- Make content easy to “synthesize into answers”: AI pulls blocks from multiple sources and “stitches” them into a complete answer. Your content must be easy to extract and combine.
- How? Give the conclusion first, then elaborate. Use summarizing, bullet-point-style sentences. When introducing a complex concept, summarize it in one sentence first, then lay it out clearly as “key points” or “summary.” Keep the tone objective, plain, and fact-based — skip the flowery marketing copy.
- Use “structured data” well: This is like drawing a map for AI, explicitly telling it which parts of your page are product info, which are FAQs, which are how-to guides. Structured data dramatically helps AI classify and extract your content accurately.
4. Scale Up: pSEO and Topical Authority
In the face of AI, small-batch content strategies are no longer enough. We need more scalable, systematic plays.
- Programmatic SEO (pSEO): Put crudely, it’s “template + dataset = massive pages.” Long-tail keywords account for 80% of search volume, convert better, and face less competition.
3 pSEO is the weapon for harvesting that long-tail traffic.- How to use it? For example, create a “alternatives to [product]” page template, then batch-generate hundreds or thousands of pages like “5 alternatives to Product A,” “8 alternatives to Product B.” You can also do feature comparison pages, industry use-case pages, etc.
- Build “topical authority”: When AI handles a complex question, it decomposes it into many sub-questions (query fan-out). If your site comprehensively and deeply covers every related question under a topic, AI will see you as the expert in that field and be more willing to recommend you.
- How? Shift from “keyword research” to “topic modeling.” Around your core business, build “topic clusters” (pillar page + cluster pages), systematically covering the full user journey from awareness and consideration to decision. Make your site the “Wikipedia” of a vertical niche.
5. New Battlefields: A Few Tactics Worth Watching
- Affiliate marketing: In the AI era, the strategic importance of affiliate marketing has exploded. It’s no longer just a distribution channel — it’s a powerful weapon for “infecting” LLM training data. Incentivize thousands of affiliates, influencers, and KOLs to discuss your brand on YouTube, Reddit, and Instagram, generating a flood of positive mentions. That content eventually gets crawled by LLMs, making your brand AI’s “default recommendation.”
- Parasite SEO: Simply put, paying to publish content about your brand on high-authority large sites (news portals, well-known magazine sites). Borrow their authority so your content is more likely to be crawled and cited by AI.
- Go deep in communities (UGC): AI deeply trusts real user discussions on platforms like Reddit and Quora, treating them as unbiased opinions. We can strategically participate in these communities, add value, and subtly increase brand mentions and positive sentiment.
Summary: Embrace Change, Evolve Your SEO Playbook
Let’s wrap this up:
- Mindset shift: From “search engine” to “answer engine” — chase “share of answer.”
- Authority shift: From “links” to “mentions” — the core is digital PR and brand voice.
- Content shift: From “pages” to “content blocks” — pursue structure and easy synthesis.
- Strategy shift: From “keywords” to “topics” — pursue scale and authority.
SEO isn’t dead. It just upgraded into a more sophisticated game that tests more skills.
The SEO of the future is no longer a pure technical craft — it will deeply fuse brand, PR, content, and technology. For us independent-site sellers who genuinely build products and brands, this is actually the best of times.
Because the sneaky black-hat plays will keep getting harder, and brands that create real value will eventually be seen and rewarded by AI.
I hope today’s share helps clear the fog and show you the road ahead.
Let’s keep pushing forward, together.
